About the Author
Alan Sangster is a chartered accountant (ICAS) with an undergraduate degree in Business Studies, a master's degree in Operational Research, and a PhD in accounting education. He has worked at Glasgow Caledonian University; the University of Strathclyde; Aberdeen University, The Queen's University, Belfast; the Open University; the Robert Gordon University; and Middlesex University. He has published over 50 articles and book chapters and has presented his research at over 100 conferences. He is professor emeritus at Middlesex University, London, and is an international visiting professor at the University of S(c)o Paulo, Brazil and at the University of Minho, Portugal. His research interests lie in accounting systems, accounting education, accounting practice, and accounting history, where his focus is upon accounting and business practice from 1200 to 1900 and, in particular, the life and work of Fra' Luca Pacioli. He has been co-author of Business Accounting and A-Level Accounting since 1994 and will be editor of Accounting Education: an international journal from 2012.

The beautiful, ill-fated debutante flapper from Alabama who inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald's Jazz Age stories wanted to be a great writer like her husband. But her short stories, articles, letters, the novel Save Me the Waltz and her play Scandalabra --most of which were written after her 1930 breakdown--are not persuasive evidence that she had great talent. The two Fitzgeralds shared subject matter (both Save Me the Waltz and Scott's Tender Is the Night depict their glamorous marriage) and a gift for rich atmospheric buildup, sensual detail and imaginative metaphor. With the exception of a few short stories, however, Zelda's fiction is lacking in plot structure, character development, and psychological or emotional depth. Her free-associative style, which drifts from the imaginative to the surreal to the incoherent, often seems to reflect mental instability. Still, her articles and letters, sometimes studded with witty observations and aphorisms, are valuable as social and literary history.

Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald has long been a romantic figure in American literature--the beautiful Southern belle-turned-flapper, the glamorous wife of F. Scott, the tragic madwoman. Few readers would ever think of her as a writer. Yet from 1922 to 1934, she published a novel, a play, short stories, and magazine articles. This first comprehensive collection of her work is much more than a literary curiosity. Compiled by noted Fitzgerald scholar Bruccoli, it represents Zelda's attempt to find her own creative identity separate from her status as the wife of a famous novelist. Included are her haunting novel Save Me the Waltz , her "farce fantasy" play Scan dalabra, semi-autobiographical stories and articles, and letters written to her husband from the passionate days of their courtship to the bitterness and sadness of Zelda's mental breakdown. While much of her prose is overblown with almost surrealistic descriptions, making for sometimes difficult reading, there is an original mind and wit at work here. The tragedy is that her mental state (she wrote many of these pieces after her 1930 breakdown) prevented her from developing her craft as writer. Highly recommended for literature collections.

See a large volume of Zelda's actual writing and judge her talent for yourself

I had read Zelda (a fictionalized verson of Zelda Fitzgerald's life) for an upcoming book club meeting. I liked it a lot and it made me want to read some of her actual writings. The book has her major novel, magazine articles and some letters. I have not read it all but I am finding it fairly engaging, If you are an F. Scott Fitzgerald fan I think this would be of interest to you since Zelda was an important part of his life and a big part of the experiences he used in some of his books.

The (almost) perfect book on the topic

As a MPH student, I was required to purchase this book. I find it great. All the topics are treated in deep and the author's expertise as a former Public Health Professor gives it a first-hand knowledge on the matter. I have enjoyed the case-studies and the interviews have given me relevant and wise advices for the Public health topic, as well as for my professional life. As a con, I'd love this book to have some pictures like funny cartoons to exemplify some points, because it 'just' has conceptual figures, models, and tables. Anyway, it remains as one of the best texts on the field.

Duncan M. McGreggor

Duncan M. McGreggor, having programmed with GOTOs in the 1980s, has made up for that through community service by making open source contributions for more than 20 years. He has spent a major part of the past 10 years dealing with distributed and scientific computing (in languages ranging from Python, Common Lisp, and Julia to Clojure and Lisp Flavored Erlang). The matplotlib book for intermediate users

This is the definite book to learn the most advanced aspects of matplotlib. Even though the book covers installation and gives the fundamentals about basic plots, it is best suited for intermediate users in both Python and matplotlib. In fact, the authors are very class-oriented, making a fair familiarity with object-oriented programming something of a prerequisite. However, if you have those prerequisites the book is a worthy investment as you will be able to take full advantage of matplotlib.
Even though the topics covered are advanced, from the matplotlib architecture to deploying it in Docker and implementing in parallel computing, they are presented in a clear and concise way. Yet the breadth of applications covered is quite comprehensive, and the authors are able to articulate all the different chapters so that the learning feels like a natural progression instead of trying to cram very disparate subjects. The code is elegant and relatively short, facilitating its reading; and the authors explanations for it are very easy to follow. In particular, the chapter of big data visualization definitely goes beyond what is presented in other books that also cover the same topic, and the implementation explanations are much better. The fact that the book is under 300 pages long is a huge plus. The only chapter I felt that wasn't as easy to follow is the one on GUI deployment.
One aspect I really enjoyed about the book is the multiple explanations about the different approaches to creating figures with matplotlib. When you are learning Python and matplotlib you see some books that use pyplot, while others use pylab. Or some like the ax. synthax while others stick to the plt. one. This is the first book in which I see a presentation of all those possibilities, along with their advantages and disadvantages. By the same token, if you are confused as to when to use Seaborn vs yhat ggplot, what's the point of NetworkX, what is ModGrapher, etc. you will find all those explanations here, along with suggestions for their appropriate application.

Very good book to improve your matplotlib skills

I bought this book with the goal of improving my basic knowledge of matplotlib: while the creation of basic plots is straightforward, I found it difficult to modify the default behaviors of the library, and I faced problems in plotting large amount of data. I can safely say that this book helped me to solve both issues. As the author mentions in the book, a prior knowledge of matplotlib will definitely makes the reading more enjoiable.

The book begins by giving an historical overview of matplotlib and by introducing two popular projects, seaborn and pandas. The chapters that follow describes the matplotlib internal architecture and its API. Next the author illustrates how events are handled in matplotlib and how to create interactive plots. The fifth chapter is dedicated to high-level plotting and shows how to create plots with third-party libraries, such as networkX, pandas, and seaborn, which wrap matplotlib functionality. The chapter also briefly introduces Bokeh, a library that offers a series of improvements over matplotlib and focus its attention on the web browser. In this chapter the author did a very good job in showing how a good visualization of the data is crucial in data analysis. The next chapter covers the customization (and the configuration) of matplotlib. Here the author shows how to create complex layouts where different plots are combined in the same figure. In the eight chapter the author explains how to plot huge amount of data by illustrating different strategies that range from using tools such as numpy's memmap function and pytables, to decimating data (removal of a fraction of the data). The last chapter shows how it is possible to improve the performance of matplotlib by using a clustered environment.

Last but not least, the authors provided a GitHub repository with the example code and notebooks of each chapter of the book.
