QBQ! by John G. Miller is a motivational primer aimed at purging the "blame, complaining, and procrastination" from the workplace. Miller believes that one of the hallmarks of today's business culture is a lack of personal accountability; he prescribes the cure in this series of short stories and personal observations drawn from his years of experience running his organizational development firm. His main point is that positive change begins with individuals changing themselves: "Instead of asking, 'When will others walk their talk?' let's walk our talk first." The result is choppy (39 chapters in 115 pages), and at times Miller's advice boils down to truism and cliché. This is a quick but deep book that explores the role of personal accountability in one's work and personal life. In his own work experience, Miller found that many people look for others to blame their problems and conflicts on. He proposes that instead of asking who is to blame for the situation, we should ask, "What can I do to improve the situation?" Only by being able to ask this "question behind the question" can we take ownership of the problem and start working toward a solution. Throughout the book, Miller (who has consulted for major corporations with his firm, QBQ, Inc.) recounts real-world situations—in customer service, retail sales, personal relationships and the corporate boardroom—and the positive and not-so-positive ways they were handled. Each example reinforces the message that personal accountability and ownership of a problem not only leads to a resolution but also lifts people willing to take ownership and action above those looking to play the "blame game." From responsibility, says the author, comes leadership and greater career opportunities. In one's personal life, Miller says, ownership of conflict can also lead to enhanced relationships and greater enjoyment of daily life.

Wonderful book. My company purchased 150 copies of this book for our staff and decided this culture of personal accountability is one we would adopt. The book is an easy read and the staff loved it. Within days they were re-thinking how they did things and what they said. We have reinforced this with weekly meetings to discuss the book and ways to encourage those being personally accountable.

A few did not care to read the book or thought it was a corporations way of "making us do more work", which is the I am the victim way of thinking. They obviously did not read the book much....... and I don't think they will survive in our new culture of QBQ!

On to the second book for my staff. So many of them liked the book so much they are purchasing copies for family members, as graduation gifts, and for friends.

The easiest and most useful tool you can give your employees to help them personally and professionally!

Handymen, trades people and QBQ accountability

As.a handyman and carpenter QBQ speaks to me and the requirement to bring personal accountability to each client project. Unfortunately once a week I hear horrror stories about of my colleagues inability to keep their promises to clients.

Trades people (flooring, handyman, electrical, etc) need to re-work their understanding of how a client facing business is supposed to work.

To ask themselves the question (QBQ) every day, Am I taking responsibility here. Am I being honest about the capabilities I have and pass on work I am not qualified to do.

Have I made these mistakes, absolutely, but I learned that I cannot do my best work if my personal life, finances or equipment isn't in tip top shape. Because if I am not at my best my clients will suffer.

QBQ, a great read and worth a re-read

I first read QBQ six or seven years ago. Since then I've re-read it many times, given away dozens of copies, and it's definitely in my top five favorite books. A lot of what's in QBQ is stuff I should know, or in many cases I do know it, but I need to be reminded. I love the simple and short chapters of this book for those regular reminders.

A Propaganda Masterpiece

I already own this book in the original German so imagine my surprise when I ordered the book here and received a quite faithful reproduction in English with some introductory text added. The book is not really authored by Dr. Goebbels but is undoubtedly inspired by him and is a propaganda masterpiece. Back in the 1930s, tobacco cards were quite popular, so all pictures in the book are reproductions of the front sides of tobacco cards. The idea with the book was to have the reader fill it in as one might a stamp album, attaching cards acquired on the matching space in the book. This format assured that the book did not become a coffee-table book for mere show, but was actively and eagerly opened regularly as collectors posted newly acquired photos in their proper places. Stamp collecting was extremely popular in Europe and in America during the 1930s as were many associated collecting crazes. National Socialism did not innoculate one against the urge to collect something as this urge was especially strong in Germany. The Nazis were quite aware of the acquisitive nature of the people. The genius of this book uses the acquisitive instints of the people, instilling in them a desire for a complete collection and infusing them with a benign, fatherly portrait of their fuhrer! What a masterstroke! It is said that most German language copies were destroyed by their owners after the war in an attempt to appear to have been apolitical. Fortunately, some copies were saved thus allowing this fabulous reproduction to be available to the public today. This book should serve as a cautionary tale of the power of propaganda. Even those of us who live in relatively free countries and are jaded by a daily barrage of political and commercial propaganda are susceptible to a well-designed and well-orchestrated propaganda campaign.

The Black Side of Marketing

I just got this book yesterday,and stayed up til midnight scan- ning it. The subject matter is repellent, the packaging and mar- keting of Adolf Hitler, for the German nation, but at the same time, it is fascinating to read. Dr. Goebbels utilized some very "modern" ideas to market Hitler, such as using paste-in stickers for booklets, showing Hitler using the then revolutionary concept of flying all over Germany to get to multiple sites for speeches. Giving the impression he was omnipresent, and concerned about all economic and age groups-where ever he popped up.
It is both horrifying to read, because you know what happens even tually, but strangely fascinating, watching how the devil's mar- keter packaged him, complete with glowing testimonies from people coming from all walks of life. In all the photo ops, der fuehrer is shown smiling benevolently, as ecstatic crowds greet him. Yes there are the requisite baby-kissing, attentively listening to children, etc.
So, if you wish to study the black side of marketing and packag- ing a political figure-read this book. And remember it's lessons well when you are asked to vote for someone that is packaged a little too smartly.....there lurks no friend, but a savage mask- ing behind a sheep's clothes.
Well worth the price for it's historical value, as well as the wrenching reality that one has seen such slick packing of polit- ical figures before-remember The Selling of the President?

LET THE READER BEWARE

If you consider yourself an amateur history buff as I do, and is fascinated by tyrants such as Adolf Hitler or Joseph Stalin, this book is one that should interest you.
There are many pictures that one will normally not see nowadays. Pictures of happy Germans fawning over their Fuehrer. The writing is stilted and bad. But it is interesting in how different writers were so uniform in their deification of one man. Under normal circumstances this book would not rate one or two stars due to the poor writing style but the importance and significance of this book makes these a good book for one's collection. But only if the reader has an interest in such drivel.
If one is to believe Joseph Goebbels, the German people loved their Fuehrer in 1936. But did the German people love their Fuehrer in 1946?

Forex trading is now a lot easier for me

The stock market has always intrigued me, so when I came across this book I quickly bought it. The trading strategies outlined in the book are so easy that I am sorry I did not find it earlier. Some really simple forex strategies are outlined along with examples of how trades may turn out, depending on stock market conditions. The day trading tools that can be used are mentioned, and many of the trading jargon used are explained.

This book will make a great addition to my finance books collection. If you are curious about forex trading or want to learn some strategies that can help to make your trading a success, read the book.

Very informative books about trading

It was a great read! These books are guide to trading. First book "Day Trading" tells you about trading basics, different techniques, plans and strategies.It is a great find for the beginner. Second one book "Forex" was gold to me, because I always wanted to try trading with Forex. This book tells all about Forex and how you can be master at it! Third book "Options Trading" tells you about common mistakes, strategies and lot of more as it relates on trading. I have to say all these 3 books are full package!
