About the Author
Mobeen Azhar is a BBC journalist, regular reporter for NPR's This World, and Prince fanatic. His documentary short Hunting For Prince's Vault was a worldwide hit, airing on BBC News 24, BBC World Service and NPR. While filming it he visited Paisley Park and interviewed many of Prince's associates, some of them speaking about Prince for the first time. Mobeen has reported for BBC's The One Show, Assignment, 5Live Investigates, as well as appearing on The Huffington Post Live. He has won an Amnesty International award and has been nominated for a One World Media Award and a BAFTA award. He has attended 53 Prince concerts and even appeared on stage with the man himself.

Excellent Book for Fans!

Excellent book written For the Fans. Fun memories from band mates and friends! No need for the author to write Long Winded paragraphs to rehash everything leaving room for great interesting details! Lots of Wonderful photographs, and they Match the era of each entery. It's also chronologically written. I'm Very happy with this book and being a Huge fan who doesn't need to reread Everything ever written, this is a Beautiful breath of fresh air. Highly Recommended to Everyone in the Purple Army.

PRINCE - The Soundtrack of my Life.... Excellent Book!

I love Prince. I loved Prince from his very first release "For You" which features the hit "Soft & Wet" as well as many other jewels. I just received my book in the mail. I love everything about it from the cover to the content. Being a radio personality, this book is filled with a wealth of information that will leave you emotional, inspired and breathless after reading the paragraphs in this book from individuals who were blessed with the opportunity to hang in is space at some point in time is his life. The music Prince created is the sound track of my life which I will forever listen to non stop! This is a well written book from a different perspective. The perspective of those who lived the dream with our "PRINCE"... Bravo! Well written & well done! This book is a must have for your collection!

Perfect Mixed of Autobiography and How To for the Entreprenuer

Ryan Blair is a New York Times Bestseller thanks to his book Nothing to Lose, Everything to Gain. He is also an accomplished CEO, investor, and, as the book states, a “former gang member turned multimillionaire entrepreneur”. Ryan is credited with helping take the network marketing company Visalus to the next level, taking it from $600,000 in sales per month to $600,000 per year, making himself and his investors millions in the process.

In his book, Nothing to Lose, Ryan gives us a glimpse into his childhood, his early days in business, the best practices that helped him lead multiple companies to success and the best ways to not make multi-million dollar mistakes. Ryan was raised in Southern California in an environment of gangs and violence that would generally lead someone into a life of crime, but after getting arrested many times and spending time in jail, he decided to turn his life around. Ryan’s mother remarried a man that taught Ryan about investing, business, and entrepreneurship – pairing those lessons with what his biological father taught him about hard work, Ryan was able to create and propel multiple tech companies and health and wellness companies to success.

Some of the most important lessons that Ryan discusses in this book are very powerful for individuals looking to become CEOs or investors in other companies. He dedicates entire chapters to the subjects of using your assets to propel your business, million-dollar mistakes that he made that he warns us about, launching your own business, raising money, hiring and firing and using your business to create residual and recurring revenue.

I recommend this book, not only as an autobiography of business lessons and success, but also as a how-to lesson of what to do and what not to do when starting a business. DO NOT READ THIS BOOK if your not ready for excellence!! Just kidding Read it anyway!! This book has completely changed the way I view my life. I read. I am a reader of all kinds of spiritual, personal, professional self help books. Ryan Blair is amazing. Full of wisdom, experience, character and integrity. At the same time he is the most down to earth and humble man. The craziest thing is that after reading this book when I come across challenges in my life I can actually hear Ryan in my head giving me great advice. Im crazy YES!! But my point is this book will resonate with you, his words will impact your thinking and if you really listen to that voice you will find your strength, your true potential and the REAL reason you are here on this earth!!

Ryan Blair's book 'Nothing to Lose, Everything to Gain' is a transparent look at how a rough start at life does not have to cement your destiny. We all have struggles and we all face trials; some more than others. What matters is what you do when life isn't lived in a house with a white picket fence. Blair took a chance at baring his soul and sharing how his childhood turned bad, got turned around. Blair seized the oportunity to turn his life around when the opportunity knocked... too many would have just taken the free ride for as long as they could, and never excelled into a self made millionaire. Even the layman can understand it

With 2 Ph.D.'s in his hip pocket and many scholarly writings to his name, William Lane Craig could go through life as a pompous ivory tower dweller. Instead, Craig has made himself available to the common man. From the information he provided Strobel in his layperson works to works like Hard Questions, Craig is understandable for any Christian willing to hear. This is a simple, 8-chapter book that hits issues like doubt, unanswerer prayer, and suffering and evil that would be a benefit to anyone struggling with these issues. The book is not meant to be comprehensive, and certainly with only 8 topics, there is much left out of the book. But what is here is very concise and straightforward. I don't agree with Craig every step of the way, though I understand the process of his thinking. (If you have ever heard him debate, from atheists to Muslims, you would understand why it would be intimidating to disagree with him to his face!) Overall, I recommend this book--have it on the shelf--and when an issue comes up (such as abortion, homosexuality, or whether or not a person can reach God through Christ alone), you will be ready with good information.

Powerful and Scholarly

The only reason that I haven't given this book 5 stars is because I am working under the assumption that any man-made work can be improved.

However, Craig has outdone himself with this book. Much of his earlier writing contains the same concise logic and strong argumentation, but "Hard Questions, Real Answers" accomplishes this in language anyone can understand. Perhaps this is the book's greatest strength, it does not sacrifice intellectual reasoning and Craig's ability to analyze problems from a variety of perspectives, for popular approval. I mean, it is one thing to write on the relationship of God to Time or to defend the physical resurrection of Jesus; but it is another to tackle the most complex and volatile social issues from a standpoint that is both Christian and scholarly.

Also, this book does not deal merely with 'Christian' problems. The chapters probe the depths of the modern human struggle. The chapter on failure is extremely poignant and insightful in its analysis of how one should react to and come back from personal disappointments and tragedies.

Ultimately, this book is not only a great read, it is an excellent tool for evangelism and discipleship in our postmodern world.

Don't Judge a Book by Its Cover; Take a Look at Its Author First

"Don't judge a book by its cover." Everyone has heard that phrase a few times in their life, right? Well, this book -- which upon first sight appears to be a soft evangelical text for teenagers, ala those found in your local Christian book store -- is actually very deep in its thought, and thorough with every area it covers. That is to be expected from Dr. William Lane Craig.

Craig addresses all eight subjects covered in "Hard Questions, Real Answers" very well (the two chapters on the 'problem of evil' were simply top-notch). Contrary to another reviewer who expressed a somewhat incoherent disagreement with Craig's chapter on homosexuality, I believe Craig tackled homosexuality (which is a very difficult topic in the first place) with insight, and showed none of the alleged ignorance.

He also tells of his own personal experiences in several chapters (e.g., the conversion of his two parents nearing the end of his father's life, and how his first attempt at getting a Doctorate in theology failed, despite prayer). Besides merely illustrating a topic, personal sories such as these let the reader know that Craig has experienced and is hence familiar with at least most of the subjects he writes about in his book.

In conclusion of a brief review, this is not typically the type of book one would expect from Dr. Craig, the author of such titles as "The Kalam Cosmological Argument" and "Atheism, Theism, and Big Bang Cosmology". But it is a good read nonetheless for insightful answers to a few specific (but very significant) questions.

About the Author
Samara Klar is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Arizona. She studies how individuals' social surroundings and personal identities influence their political attitudes and behaviors. Her work has been published in numerous journals including the American Journal of Political Science, the Journal of Politics, and Public Opinion Quarterly, and has been supported by the National Science Foundation. She has been recognized with a Distinguished Junior Scholar award in Political Psychology from the American Political Science Association and a Burns Roper Fellowship from the American Association of Public Opinion Research. Klar earned a PhD in Political Science from Northwestern University, Illinois and also holds degrees from Columbia University, New York and McGill University, Montréal.

Yanna Krupnikov is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at State University of New York, Stony Brook. Her research focuses on the way political communication affects public opinion and the way people express their political opinions through political actions. Krupnikov's work has been published in numerous journals including the American Journal of Political Science, Political Behavior, and Political Communication, and has been supported by the National Science Foundation. She is the winner of the Midwest Political Science Association's Robert Durr Award and the award for the best paper by an emerging scholar. Krupnikov earned a PhD in Political Science from the University of Michigan and also holds degrees from the University of Toronto and Brandeis University, Massachusetts.

Celebrated Stanford University historian Clayborne Carson is the director and editor of the Martin Luther King Papers Project; with thousands of King's essays, notes, letters, speeches, and sermons at his disposal, Carson has organized King's writings into a posthumous autobiography. In an early student essay, King prophetically penned: "We cannot have an enlightened democracy with one great group living in ignorance.... We cannot have a nation orderly and sound with one group so ground down and thwarted that it is almost forced into unsocial attitudes and crime." Such statements, made throughout King's career, are skillfully woven together into a coherent narrative of the quest for social justice. The autobiography delves, for example, into the philosophical training King received at Morehouse College, Crozer Theological Seminary, and Boston University, where he consolidated the teachings of Afro-American theologian Benjamin Mays with the philosophies of Locke, Rousseau, Gandhi, and Thoreau. Through King's voice, the reader intimately shares in his trials and triumphs, including the Montgomery Boycott, the 1963 "I Have a Dream Speech," the Selma March, and the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. In one of his last speeches, King reminded his audience that "in the final analysis, God does not judge us by the separate incidents or the separate mistakes that we make, but by the total bent of our lives." Carson, director of the Martin Luther King Jr. Papers Project and author of A Knock at Midnight: Inspiration from the Great Sermons of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., has pieced together an incomplete study of King's life by supplementing his extant autobiographies (e.g., Stride Toward Freedom and Where Do We Go from Here) with previously unpublished and published writings, interviews and speeches. If King's rhetorical flourishes and use of the word "negro" sometimes seem outdated, the compilation still offers a concise first-person account of his life from his birth in Atlanta in 1929 to his awakening social consciousness and discovery of the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. History propelled King to center stage in the struggle for black liberation. When Rosa Parks refused to surrender her bus seat in 1955, the "once dormant and quiescent Negro community was now fully awake" and King, along with many others in Montgomery's black community, organized the bus boycott that would launch King into his leadership role in the civil rights movement. The book offers glimpses of King's family life as well a view of famous Americans such as Stokely Carmichael, Malcolm X and JFK. (In 1960, King did not feel "there was much difference between Kennedy and Nixon." He writes, "I felt at points that he was so concerned about being President of the United States that he would compromise basic principles.") But what is most evident throughout Carson's study is the moral courage that sustained King and allowed him to inspire a largely peaceful mass movement against segregation in the face of bloody reprisals. I'm so grateful that I waited until now to read this book, and didn't read it years prior when I would have lacked the mental maturity to recognize the true power of nonviolent resistance! I'm forever grateful to Dr. King for his many contributions, and great sacrifice.

Eye-opening, and insightful. What an amazing story.

I bought this book for a number of reasons. Firstly, I knew precious little about the man who stands as a giant of history. I also knew little about the kind of Christianity he professed, and had heard some people scandalously say that King was in no real way a Christian (i.e. Christopher Hitchens). All I can say after reading this book is WOW - what an amazing story. I heard King's voice speaking every word of every chapter. It was like he was sitting next to you telling you the story of his life.

King was most certainly a Christian. He grew up in a Christian home, he went to Seminary, he became a minister and pastored a Church. He spoke of a personal relationship with Jesus. He depended on God for strength during difficult times, he prayed to Jesus, he worshiped Jesus, he preached about Jesus, and led a congregation of Jesus followers. If that's not Christian nothing is. Yet his theology was decidedly liberal. He was embarrassed by his fundamentalist upbringing, especially those who would check their minds in at the door of Church and stomp their feet during the service. He spoke candidly about denying the bodily resurrection of Jesus, and embracing the liberal view of man. However he was an honest man, who at times questioned his presuppositions. I was impressed how he preached a Gospel that led to action in the present world. Not just a gospel of Sunday pieties.

In story after story King recounted how he was committed to nonviolence because this was the way of Jesus (and Gandhi whom he was later influenced by). He didn't preach hatred of white people, but reconciliation, with an aim to a fully integrated society. If anyone had reason to hate it was King. His home was bombed, his friends homes were bombed, he and his family were verbally abused and threatened, he was stabbed, he was arrested more times than I can count, and was often the victim of gross injustice. Yet in all that he showed the world that he served another Lord, and preached a different Gospel. Violence, only begets more violence. My heart broke for those who suffered during the era of segregation. At times I was almost reduced to tears, reading about the horrors of what mankind has done to each other. Not only that but I finally came to understand a little of what it was like to grow up as a Black Man in a climate of racism, to suffer under such terrible injustice, disrespect and disenfranchisement. Blessed are the peacemakers like Dr King, for they will be called the children of God.

Yet there were times I felt that King's liberalism got the better of him. I felt that King's idea of heaven on earth was simply an integrated society where everyone had equal opportunity to all state services, good jobs, and so on. Yet this idea doesn't go far enough. What about personal repentance and transformation through the power of the Holy Spirit? Can non-violent action really bring this about? Does it treat the symptoms rather than the root cause of the issue? What God's kingdom coming to earth, and us anticipating it in the present, but recognizing it is a future reality? He condemned violent protest, and distanced himself from people like Malcolm X but didn't call on those who had been violent to repent and follow Jesus. Many times he simply rationalized their violence as the understandable reaction of those who had suffered for too long. He often saw the suffering of the negro community as redemptive. But that is to give the community too much power, and a job that only Jesus can truly accomplish. If King meant that through their suffering and weakness, they embodied Jesus' suffering, and pointed people more fully towards Christ, then I have no issues. King's views on poverty and military action were a little naive. Giving away surplus food from the western world to store it in the empty bellies of hungry Indian Children, is a noble thought, but nothing more than a short term solution to a systemic problem. Giving away food like that can drive down the prices of local produce and cause more harm for the local economy than good.

Yet those quibbles aside, this is still a fantastic book. Towards the end it gets a little dry and repetitive, but is very readable. If you only read one book on the Civil rights movement and it's pivotal leader, read this one.

One one level I an deeply ashamed that I am just reading this comprehensive, compelling, and courageous book taken from the writings and speeches of the man himself and on another level I am happy I am reading this in 2016 as the issues of racism, poverty, and war (King's self-described 3 evils) are still very much alive. This is the example of a leader as Servant - a powerful man who dedicated his power not to the creation of personal wealth but to improving the conditions for millions of people. As a black man who has directly benefited from the Civil Rights Movement I feel a personal responsibility to advance the work of Dr. King. I plan to return to this tome often for inspiration. We shall Overcome!

Objectification

Provides a historical overview of "objectification" (from Hegel to Marx to Lukacs to Simmel) or what will be called "alienation" in Marxian terms. The user/ consumer is not fixed in consuming in the mode as intended by production; through an undersatnding of "objectification" the consumer begins to engage in a process whereby consumption produces an alt-identity that has the potential to escape the hegemony of dominant systems. With the introduction of this perspective the (general) negativity towards capitalist modes of production and consumption is subverted. In a weird way the supposed determinist track of "objectification" in this book subverts itself by proclaiming its own provisional status.
The next thing to read from this text will be Spivak and Bhabha.
Miller talks about the person as 'being-with-the-world', hence refusing the separation drawn between self and world and nature.
The only thing that concerns me is that it might be only through alienation/ or negative dialectics that objectification and hence a more rounded understanding of self and world that consist the 'being-with-the-world' can be achieved, which does not differ too much from Adorno's "elitism".

Not least among the exhibits are a WWII-era Muslim Palestinian leader who was "a full fledged Nazi war criminal, and he was so declared at Nuremberg"; a "vastly underpopulated" late 19th-century Palestine, to which European Jews began emigrating; and a 75-year-long Arab-Israeli war that features "Arab nations dedicated to genocidal aggression against civilians." Each of the 32 chapters begins with a commonly heard accusation against Israel, with long quotes from reputable "Accusers" (including newspapers and intellectuals), followed by "The Reality" as Dershowitz sees it, and "The Proof," often drawing on the historical record.

Dershowitz is one of the nation's most prominent and visible defense attorneys, and he is also an ardent, eloquent, but not always uncritical defender of Israel. This book is written in the form of a legal brief. He does not seek to defend particular policies of the current Israeli government. In fact, Dershowitz has frequently criticized some Israeli policies toward Palestinians, particularly regarding West Bank settlements. Rather, here he attempts to rebut what he views as the more general and blatantly discriminatory criticisms of Israel as a state and culture. Some of these criticisms deny the "right" of Israel to exist. In response, Dershowitz asserts both the practical and moral justification for the continued existence of Israel as Jewish state. He also convincingly refutes several other oft-repeated myths, including the supposedly benign treatment of Jews in Arab lands and the "cycle of violence" canard that morally equates Palestinian suicide bombings with Israeli efforts to arrest or kill bombers before they act. Fattouma is disappointed in love, so he sets out seeking comfort in wisdom. His goal is the fabled land of Gebel, from which no one has ever returned. First, though, his caravan must pass through five other countries, each distinct in governance and religion, and each delaying Ibn for years. Mashriq is despotic, peopled by naked slaves, and here Ibn falls in love with Arousa and starts a family. War separates them, and he pursues her through Haira, a theocratic police state; Halba, the land of freedom; and Communist Aman. Finally, from Ghuroub, where only reason is worshipped, he leaves to enter Gebel, his journey toward perfection almost complete. This novel is Mahfouz's most purely polemical work, directly engaging the issues of religion and politics that have been the strong subtexts of his previous fiction. Nobelist Mahfouz offers here a slender, magical parable of idealism and compromise through a stylized Middle East odyssey, first published in Arabic in 1983. Thwarted in marriage when his fianc‚e is claimed by the sultan's chamberlain, Qindil Muhammad al-Innabi, called Ibn Fattouma, resolves to go on a pilgrimage to the storied land of Gebel. The tale of his travels is a tale of detours. Passing through the moon-worshipping land of Mashriq, he stays for several years with lightsome Arousa, but is exiled for sharing his Muslim religion with their children. When Haira, a police state where Fattouma has been staying, conquers Mashriq, he purchases Arousa in a slave auction, but again his bride catches the eye of an influential advisor, and he is sentenced to life imprisonment for speaking out against the advisor. Released after 20 years by another war, he travels to Halba--a land of complete freedom that seems a sly portrait of America--and takes another wife; the reappearance of Arousa, though, reproaches him with his inconstancy to his pilgrimage, and he sets out for Aman, the land of perfect justice whose price is total conformity. Increasingly disillusioned in his nation's betrayal of Muslim beliefs, Fattouma follows Arousa to Ghuroub, where he attaches himself to a holy man who tries to prepare him for the journey to Gebel, but more fighting forces him to press on prematurely, and it is unclear from the ending of his journal whether he ever reaches his elusive goal. What is clear is the simple charm with which Mahfouz dramatizes fundamental questions about tolerance, love, and mortality while condensing a lifetime's worth of experience into 160 pages. Mahfouz is widely considered the most Western of contemporary Arab novelists, but the closest Western analogue here--Pilgrim's Progress starring Sinbad the Sailor--only reinforces the distance between East and West. In search of perfection by a great writer

The Journey of Ibn Fattouma is an imaginary hourny in search of an imaginary perfect political, social and religious system that we all dream of. Even with a great imagination like Mahfouz he can't even get close to the Utopia he is looking for.
He encountered war and injustice everywhere he went. At the Land of Ghoroub which is similar to (Buddhism)her realised that all imperfection resides in the essence of every human being that shows outwardly in our daily conduct with others and consequently breeds hatered, wars and injustice. Meditation or turning our conscious inwardly enables us to discover our pure ellement and become enlightend. Our outer world depends mainly on our inner realization of our oneness with everything and everyone else, and we don't have to go anywhere to in search of Utopia.
The Land of Gebel is the ultimate goal or Salvation. It is upward passage, individual, without any companion or guidance of any kind except your inner light. Anyone could reach salvation like Ibn Fattouma's wife who was from a primitive land, pagan and uneducated only through suffering.
The book is simble, easy read, lucid style and a prove that "simplicity is the seal of truth", therfore I recommend it and deservs five stars.
